I have now completed reading assessments and guided reading (small group instruction) will begin this week.
We are continuing to review reading strategies for solving unknown words and are learning some new strategies.
Comprehension strategies are also a focus in our literacy instruction so that we can understand what we read.
We are continuing to review letters and sounds that we learned in Kindergarten using Jolly Phonics. We have completed 9 letters and their sounds so far, and will review 5 more this week.
Sight words will be sent home again this week (5). Students did very well learning their sight words last week. Please return the sight word ring each day as we also use them at school to practice. Once your child recognizes all 103 Grade One sight words, we will work on spelling each one accurately.
In writing, our writing goals will be to use capital letters to start each sentence, use finger spaces between words, include punctuation at the end of each sentence, use word wall to help with spelling and to spell other words using letters and sounds that we know, and to read our sentences to make sure that they make sense.
We follow the process think, draw, label, write, add details to complete our writing.
Some special writing projects are included as well as our daily writing. This week we will be writing "About the artist" to accompany a recent art project, and will also be doing some fact writing about pumpkins.
We have been learning about these reading strategies:
So far, we have learned about the questioning owl, spinner the spider and the picturing penguin strategies.
Mathematics:
We have reviewed numbers to ten and are now focused on numbers to 20
We are exploring representing numbers in many ways
Our daily activities include counting concepts, number recognition, using tallies, ten frames, dominoes and dice
We are reviewing repeating patterns and expanding our knowledge to include more complex repeating patterns
We are practicing subitizing (look at an arrangement and say the number without counting)
